Appearance: Ryuk is a six foot tall (looks closer to ten feet) Shinigami with a deformed, stretched out, skin-and-bones body, pure white skin, bulging yellow eyes, and a clown-like smile stretched out to show jagged yellow teeth. Black hair is pulled up into fluffy spikes and he is dressed in a punk rocker fashion - completel with tight black leather clothes, fur collar, multiple belts, and a heart-shaped earring on his left ear.

Personality: Bored. Incredibly bored. Ryuk is older than the World itself and has long ago stopped caring about much of . . . anything really. His main concerns with life are simply to entertain himself and pass the time, though he has gotten sick of the other Shinigamis tendency to either sleep or gamble.

He's very childish and always attempts to get his way via whining and begging. Furthermore, his attention span is really short.

Abilities/Strengths: Ryuk is capable of flight using his wings, though he mostly uses them to hover around.

His eyes allow him to see the name and lifespan of a human so as to allow him to write down peoples names to gain their lifespan for his own (though, for whatever reason, he can't see this for the Warden even though he's certain the Warden is human).

Unless someone touches his Death Note, has especially strong or sensitive psychic abilities, or the Warden, he cannot be seen nor heard by anyone (leading to people in Econtra to see a floating cuff unless other conditions are met), though he does have a physical effect on the World if he wishes to.

Ryuk can pass through walls (except the Obex and buildings in Econtra that are locked) whenever he wishes.

Being a spirit, human weapons have no effect on him. In fact, they pass right through him when someone tries to use them on him.

Weapons: The Death Note itself - a notebook that can kill a person in forty seconds via heart attack unless otherwise specified. And, while it is not a weapon per se, a purple pen with feathers and hearts topping it that he stole from Misa shortly before she died.

Weaknesses: Girls. Ryuk gets embarrassingly shy around human girls and will turn into what is essentially a blushing schoolgirl around them.

Ryuk is also easily distracted, bored, and bribed. He refuses to take sides in conflicts and usually just hovers over it to watch like it's just daytime television and apples are to him as alcohol and cigarettes are to humans - a compulsive addiction that he WILL go through withdrawal from if he goes too long without them. He also has a very bad memory and is generally incompetent as a Shinigami and doing pretty much anything else without being given (simple) motivation.

If Ryuk ever uses his Death Note to save a human life, he will die and the human will gain his remaining lifespan.

To counterbalance the fact he is invulnerable to human weapons, the mun has decided he is vulnerable to magic and psychic skills.

History: One day, Ryuk decided to do something about the perpetual boredom he felt in the Shinigami Realm and dropped one of his two Death Notes (one he had won from the King of the Shinigami in a bet) to Earth to see what would happen. Five days later he went down to Earth to find it in the hands of one Yagami Light, who had begun using it as judgment against the wicked and unjust of the World.

Ryuk decided to stay to see what would happen and settled down to stick around Light, willing to play along with his games when Light offered a hefty enough prize (usually in the form of apples). Otherwise he stayed out of the way of Light's rivalry with L - even when it boiled over in a deception that led to L's demise.

Ryuk continued to hang out with Light as he succeeded L, moved in with the second Kira, Amane Misa, and continued to play and proceeded to become bored again as things settled into a routine. Then came Mello and Near and with it, the climax to his little pay-per-view special which ultimately ended in Light's death being written in Ryuk's own Death Note.

His entertainment done, Ryuk was forced to return to the Shinigami Realm. In fact, Ryuk was sitting in the Shinigami Realm attempting to figure out what to do next (ten years AFTER the Death Note proper) when what was to him the best thing that could have happened - he was pulled into Econtra.
